In California, we celebrate Harvey Milk Day on May 22 each year. Harvey Milk Day was designated as a day of special significance in California public schools, approved by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2009.
The research is clear: when students feel safe, supported and included in school, their learning increases, their engagement increases, and more graduate from high school who are college and career ready. At the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, we want all of our students to feel safe, supported and included. Â
Teaching & celebrating LGBTQ+ history, raising the rainbow flag and celebrating Harvey Milk's birthday in May is one way to make LGBTQ+ students feel safe and visible in the curriculum.Â
