Supporting Innovative Approaches to Education 

Whether it's a day of unstructured play, a global celebration of creativity, or an opportunity for collaboration these are all annual student events that encourage students' development of 21st century skills.  

Student Programs 2023-2024

Code for Congress (Sept-Oct '23)

Wednesdays September 6 - October 25, 2023 from 4:00-5:15 pm

The Congressional App Challenge is the most prestigious prize related to student Computer Science – and the Santa Cruz County Office of Education wants to help you win! Bring your creativity and leave with a completed app design brought to life through the support of experienced local mentors.

This free 8-week program is offered by the Santa Cruz County Office of Education to support students through the process of designing an app. If desired, students can then submit their app to the Congressional App Challenge.  Sessions will be held via Zoom – registration coming soon! 

No previous Computer Science or App Development experience necessary.

TechGirlz Virtual Techshops (Nov '23 & Feb '24)

November 16, 2023 & February 14, 2024 from 4:00-5:30 pm

Led by the computer science experts on our Tech+ team, these free virtual workshops are open to all students in Santa Cruz County.  We will have fun creating with technology.  Past sessions included dance parties, app development and game creation!

CSEdWeek Community Events (Dec '23)

December 5 & 7, 2023

Computer Science Education Week is an annual call to action to inspire K-12 students to learn computer science, advocate for equity, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners to the field.  In celebration, the Santa Cruz County Office of Education will be hosting two community nights that feature hands-on computer science activities for the whole family.

On-Demand Computer Science Assemblies

Are you looking for a fun way to get your school site excited about computer science?  Available on-demand, these assemblies will be custom designed to fit the needs of your educators and students.  Past examples include: From Books to Binary, K-2 and 3-5 differentiated lessons integrating literacy and computer science.

On-Demand Computer Science Guest Lessons

The Tech+ team at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education is available for on-site support in teaching computer science.  With specialists at the elementary and secondary level, we've got your needs covered from TK-12.  Use our request form to get started.
